Kuntoro Mangkusubroto
Dr. Ir. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, the Director of the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Implementing Agency (Badan Pelaksana Rehabilitasi dan Rekonstruksi) for Aceh and Nias brings to the role his extensive experience in corporate restructuring, emergency relief coordination, and project supervision. Dr. Kuntoro, 58, combines a distinguished track record in government and academia with an in-depth understanding of international regulations and practices in relation to development, economic growth, and reconstruction.
Dr. Kuntoro, an energy resource and business management expert, is an Associate Professor in Decision Science at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and founded the School of Business and Management at ITB in 2003. Previously, in 1982, he established ITB’s Graduate School of Transportation. He also serves as the Advisory Board Chairman of Global Rescue Network, a group of emergency relief volunteers, and as Senior Adviser to the IndoRescue organization.
Dr. Kuntoro currently serves on the boards of several national and multinational companies, including PT Unilever Indonesia and PT Semen Cibinong (Holcim Group). In the past he has served on the boards of Gulf Indonesia Resources Limited, PT Kabelindo Murni, and ConocoPhillips.
The newly-appointed Director has held a number of senior management positions in Indonesia’s state-enterprise sector as well as in government. Dr. Kuntoro was named President Director of PT Tambang Timah Tbk in 1989, and succeeded in saving the company from bankruptcy by implementing an extensive restructuring program. He left the company in 1994 to become Director General of Mines at the Indonesian Ministry of Mines & Energy, and then served as Deputy Chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) beginning in 1997. Dr. Kuntoro was appointed Minister of Mines and Energy in 1998-1999 and assumed the role of President of state electricity company PT PLN in 2000.
Most recently, Dr. Kuntoro has been actively involved in post-tsunami relief work in Aceh immediately after the December 26 tsunami through his roles with the Global Rescue Network, Indonesia Rescue Network (IndoRescue), and Wanadri (Youth Jungle Explorer and Mountaineering Association).
As the Founder and Chairman of Global Rescue Network, he supported the team that was among the first to reach Meulaboh, one of the regions worst affected by the tsunami. Global Rescue Network is made up of a group of emergency service volunteers, including doctors, rescuers, paramedics, radio operators, and environmental conservationists, and has been involved in a variety of post-tsunami relief efforts in northern Sumatra and Aceh. Dr. Kuntoro also sits on the board of IndoRescue, which developed a scheme to build houses and drill water wells in Lamno, West Aceh.
In addition to a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Dr. Kuntoro has a Master’s Degrees in Industrial Engineering and Civil Engineering from Stanford University, USA, and a Doctoral Degree in Engineering Science – Decision Science from ITB. He has also received several prestigious awards, including the Adhicipta Rekayasa Award for Engineering Excellence presented by the Indonesian Engineers Association in 1995, and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Award for Engineering Excellence in 1996.
Dr. Kuntoro is a published author, including the college textbook Analisa Keputusan (Decision Analysis). His wide-ranging interests have enabled him to serve as a member of the National Economic Council, the National Research Council, and on the Board of Advisors of the Indonesia Boy Scouts Council. Dr. Kuntoro is married with 5 sons. He and his wife will live in Banda Aceh as part of his duties as Director of the BRR's Implementing Agency.
